How to Create Fall Planters

Creating my fall planters is one of my favorite things to do. I grew up doing this but if you don't have a green thumb of your own don't fret, I'm going to share some quick tips on how you can create beautiful planters on your own.

Come up with a plan before buying your plants

-color scheme
-what pots to use
-layout
-how many plants needed and sizes

Use 3 different heights in your planters. Tall grasses work great for the taller height while the cabbage fills in the base. I'm a huge fan of the cabbage! You can get ones that have more green/white and ones that have more purple. Creeping Jenny is also a favorite of mine to use in planters not because of its name but the vibrant bright green pops with the dark purples of the grasses or cabbage. Then finish it off with a pop of color. I love filling in the gaps in my planters with mini sugar pumpkins and moss.

Remember that mums are annuals so once you're done with them in your planters you can transfer to a regular bed in your yard and they will come up again the following year.

Add some pumpkins in different shades (I like white and green ones) to finish the look.

Here are some of my planters I created for the fall and a couple of my favorite inspiration planters.

I added some moss in this planter because the foliage didn't fill the entire top.

For this taller urn I added the Creeping Jenny for the overflow

Here are some of my favorites from Pinterest

Another idea is to layer your pots. Plant the same flower in each pot but 3 different size planters. Example: a purple mum in one pot, a cabbage in another pot and a tall grass in a 3rd and stagger them in a grouping on your porch. As seen on Centsational Girl

These have long been a favorite with the white cabbage

How to update furniture with spray paint

Spray paint is magical! Once you start you sort of can't stop. You start walking around your house eyeing up your next drab piece to be transformed. Chairs, the kids dinosaurs (they have so many toys they'll never know), picture frames and the list could go on and on. My latest victim was a cabinet that's been in my entry for 2 years. We bought it from the previous owner and I've had many ideas for her. I walk by it 700 times a day so I had a lot of thoughts on how to transform her and this is what won out because although I wanted to do full gloss navy I figured I can do that later but once I paint it all there is no going back to this look. I may have also been lazy and didn't feel like carrying the entire piece outside too.

I spotted these amazing knobs and this is what gave me the idea to do white drawers, until I realized I had 2 hole hardware currently on the piece and this one one....sigh.

Back to the drawing board for the hardware but for now the original went back on until I decide.

Here's how to transform a piece of furniture with spray paint:

Wipe your furniture clean and make sure it's completely dry. As you can see my grass already looks like crap so I didn't bother with a drop cloth.

I used this because it was in my garage but it works great for spray painting pieces and covers well.

This was a little weekend project that was so easy and gave her a little face lift.

I'm liking this hardware. What are your thoughts?

Adding a little leather would give it a more masculine look

Fall Pillow Picks

I'm back and kicking off the week with my favorite fall pillows. Although I'm not quite ready for summer to be over I can't help but get really excited for fall with all the new Fall catalogs filling my mailbox. Besides fall is my favorite time of year.

So are you ready for some pillow eye candy?

Pottery Barn nailed it this fall with their gold accent tables and lamps to these beautiful jewel toned pillows.

I also have an attraction to Pom pom pillows and I'm seeing them everywhere. These velvet Pom Pom pillows from west elm are so cute and a great update for the fall.

But my weakness is cable knit cozy pillows and faux fur pillows. They make you want to just curl up on the couch with a cozy blanket, some warm apple cider and a good book.
